American II (Pi)

Chris Greatley
Following perusal of a book on steam locomotive drafting based on a PhD thesis by Dr J.J.G. Koopmans of Holland, it was decided to modify the drafting arrangements of USA class 0-6-0T No. 65 along lines introduced by George Armstrong in the USA in the 1920s and 1930s. The work included a new cast blastpipe nozzle with six radial petal-shaped orifices, a redesigned chimney, alterations to the brick arch in the firebox and an increased supply of primary air to the ashpan. The changes have led to a significant increase in steam generation combined with savings in coal.
